Modern Project Management in Smart Regions

Smart Regions leverage digital technology, data, and innovative practices to improve the quality of life for their residents. The technologies that form the backbone of smart regions have recently gained momentum especially through the launch of the generative AI “ChatGPT” two years ago. Modern Project Management – that selects between various approaches of project management based on individual requirements and boundary conditions and applies information and communication technology in a tailored way – can be linked to the topic of smart regions in two respects. First, it is the same technologies that have been mentioned above that bear the potential to impact and change the profession and discipline of project management. This might affect fields such as the project planning process, the analysis of project risks, project management training, stakeholder collaboration and management etc. Second, it is projects that are the vehicles for the implementation of digital technologies and innovative practices. These kinds of projects can also be referred to as Digital Transformation Projects.

A significant number of research articles on the potential impact of generative AI in project management has been published, already. With this stream we not only look for conceptual thoughts and structural work but seek to better understand actual applications in practice in and beyond the context of smart regions. Moreover, this stream shall contribute to our understanding of the ways in which regions approach and structure their path towards becoming smart regions with the help of projects. This will also include the description of these (digital transformation) projects as well as their management.

Topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Theoretical and practical use cases and implementations of digital technologies such as generative AI in project management
  • Best practices of stakeholder collaboration and change management using modern project management
  • Management of Digital Transformation Projects incl. approaches, frameworks, methods, concepts of a modern project management
  • Regions’ structural approaches on their path to becoming smart regions, such as project portfolio management techniques and digitalization roadmaps
